3 Signs of an Aging Furnace

Consider the following:

  1. Compared to an air conditioning unit, a gas furnace is really a pretty simple piece of equipment, with only a few significant components. The major consideration is the heat exchanger, for if the heat exchanger becomes cracked the furnace must be replaced. A cracked heat exchanger poses both a fire hazard and a carbon monoxide danger. Do not mess around with a cracked heat exchanger!
  2. A second component which requires periodic attention is the blower motor. If you hear odd noises coming from your furnace, chances are the blower motor has worn bearings and/or something is amiss with the blower assembly. In either case, a competent service technician can make repairs. Or, if the furnace is over 10 years old you may want to balance the cost of repairs against a furnace replacement.
  3. Finally, the burners in your furnace will occasionally become dirty and/or rusty. Routine maintenance will keep this from becoming a problem. Very dirty burners lead to uneven flames and must be cleaned.

How Can You Tell If Your Furnace Has a Cracked Heat Exchanger?

Since a damaged heat exchanger is such a danger, it's extremely important to be aware of what to watch out for:

  • Change in the appearance of the pilot light (it should burn blue and not orange or yellow)
  • The presence of soot on the furnace interior
  • A formaldehyde-like odor coming from the furnace
  • The onset of flu-like symptoms among those in your household
