What Are the Benefits of Installing a UV Air Scrubber?

Apr 07, 2020

For decades, ventilation, filtration, and humidity control have served as the cornerstone of an effective indoor air quality program. Unfortunately, none of these strategies are capable of eradicating biological contaminants. Installing a UV light offers an additional level of protection against hazardous airborne pollutants, and the latest UV air scrubber technology takes the effectiveness of UV to a whole new level.

Some Basic Information About Ultraviolet Light

Ultraviolet light (UV) exists at wavelengths between visible light and x-rays. There are three types of UV light.

  • UV-A (320-400nm): Around 95 percent of the UV light emitted by the sun is UV-A. It has the longest wavelength and is least harmful.
  • UV-B (290-320nm): UV-B sun is responsible for sunburns and is the primary cause of skin cancer.
  • UV-C (100-290nm): UV-C is the most hazardous kind of UV light, but it can be safely controlled through mechanical devices and used as a disinfectant for air, water, food, and various surfaces. At the appropriate wavelength, the light works by disrupting and destroying the nucleic acid inside the cell structure of an aggressive organism. This either destroys the organism or renders it unable to reproduce.

Because of its germicidal properties, artificially produced UV-C light is used for sterilization purposes in hospitals, factories, offices, and airplanes across the globe daily.

Here are some of the most common organisms and substances UV light has been known to eradicate:

  • Rhinoviruses (common colds)
  • Influenza (flu)
  • Pollen
  • Coronaviruses (such as SARS)
  • Common mold
  • MRSA infections
  • Fungi
  • Infectious hepatitis
  • Smoke
  • VOCs

As of early April 2020, UV-C light’s effect on coronavirus COVID-19 is still being studied, but the outlook appears hopeful, due to this light’s effectiveness against novel coronavirus SARS-CoV.

The Benefits of a UV Air Scrubber for Homes

The Air Scrubber Plus provides all the benefits of a conventional UV lamp with additional enhancements. The unit produces UV-C light that passes through a unique honeycomb matrix. This process turns water and oxygen molecules into oxidizers that attack and neutralize contaminants in the building. As a result, harmful biological agents are eliminated in the HVAC’s system’s coil, ductwork, and inside your home.

Along with removing airborne contaminants, the Air Scrubber Plus removes 99 percent of surface contaminants. Not only does this make your air more hygienic, but it also maximizes your HVAC system’s efficiency. Your household members with respiratory ailments like allergies and asthma will likely start noticing relief from bothersome symptoms fairly quickly. Additionally, your home will be cleaner and smell fresher.
