Why Maintenance Matters

Is AC Maintenance Worth It?

If you are one of those homeowners in the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp, this message is for you. Maintenance of your heating and air conditioning system is a necessity, not an option.

Much like your car, heating and air conditioning systems require routine maintenance to function properly. And, just as poorly maintained vehicles get poor gas mileage, poorly maintained heating and air conditioning systems use too much energy.

Forget the arguments about energy efficiency. If you want to spend too much money on your utility bills there isn't anything I can write to change your mind. And, forget about the longevity arguments. If you are okay with your heating and cooling system wearing out prematurely, who's to argue with you?

Small Investment, Big Savings

From a practical standpoint, investing a small amount of money at the beginning of each season pays big dividends. Well-maintained systems break down less often, and you sure don't need to be without air conditioning in the middle of a Texas summer! Air conditioning service companies are busiest during the summer months, and you may not be able to get same day service when the outside temperature is 105 degrees! I don't know about you, but the thought of one sleepless night in a hot bedroom makes me invest in preventive maintenance every time! After all, annual preventive maintenance contracts begin at just $125.

A Well-Maintained System is a Safe System

In my opinion, the maintenance argument which trumps all others has to do with safety. Heating and air conditioning systems are fueled by electricity and/or gas. Pure and simple, improper or inadequate maintenance of electric and gas appliances is dangerous! How many house fires each year are blamed on gas leaks or electrical shorts? How many people get sick (or worse) as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning?

So, don't maintain your gas furnace to save money. Don't have your air conditioner checked to prolong its life. But do have your HVAC system inspected at least annually to protect yourself and your family. For just $125 per year (single system), Tom's Mechanical will inspect the heating and air conditioning system in your home, once in the Spring and again in the Fall.
