Tom’s Tips

Keeping your heating/cooling system in tip-top shape
  • Replace your air filter frequently. Under normal conditions, a 1″ filter should be replaced monthly (always use pleated filters) and a 4″ filter should be replaced twice annually.
  • Keep dirt, trash, cottonwood, etc. out of your outdoor coils by washing with a water hose. Be sure to turn off

power to the unit first, then spray coils from top to bottom. Wait at least 15 minutes for drying to occur before restarting the system. This does not replace a professional cleaning (which may require some disassembly) but it will improve system performance between seasonal preventive maintenance checks.

  • Prevent condensate drain problems by pouring one cup of a diluted solution of bleach and water (4 parts

water to 1 part bleach) into an opening in the condensate drain near your unit. Of course, you must be careful not to spill the solution on carpet, wood floors or clothing.

  • Do not block off or close any air vents completely. Your system was designed for a certain amount of air flow

and will not function as well as possible if improperly modified.

  • Have your heating and cooling system professionally checked each spring and fall to ensure maximum safe

performance, maximum energy efficiency and maximum equipment life. You will be surprised how inexpensive this service is! Please refer to ‘Planned Maintenance’ page via the menu selection bar.
