With conventional non-self contained split cooling systems the fan system which moves air through the ducts, and the cooling coil, are located indoors in an air handling section. Air handlers are available which discharge air horizontally or vertically. The compressor and condenser (outdoor) fan are located in an outdoor weatherized cabinet called a condensing unit. Split systems offer the advantage of greater variety in efficiencies and capacities which can be created by mixing and matching indoor / outdoor sections. Split systems are also a good option where there is not room to physically locate a larger packaged system outdoors. Air-cooled split systems range in sizes from 1½ - 120 nominal tons cooling capacity.
