Cooling / Gas Furnace Split System
With conventional non-self contained split gas-electric systems the fan system which moves air
through the ducts, the cooling coil module and furnace module are located indoors. Furnace sections
and coils are available which discharge air horizontally or vertically. Also, the furnace section
may be installed without other split system components to provide heating only operation. Furnaces
may also be converted from natural gas to LP gas configurations with an accessory kit. The
compressor and condenser (outdoor) fan are located in an outdoor weatherized cabinet called a
condensing unit. Split furnace systems offer the advantage of greater variety in efficiencies
and capacities which can be created by mixing and matching indoor / outdoor sections. Split
systems are also a good option where there is not room to physically locate a larger packaged
system outdoors. Air-cooled split furnace systems range in sizes from 1½ - 10 nominal tons
cooling capacity (in larger capacities a "twinning" kit may be required).
