If you are one of those homeowners in the "If it ain't broke,
don't fix it" camp, this message is for you. Maintenance of your
heating and air conditioning system is a necessity, not an option.
Forget the arguments about
energy efficiency. If you want to spend too much money on your utility bills there isn't
anything I can write to change your mind. And, forget about the longevity
arguments. If you are okay with your heating and cooling system wearing
out prematurely, who's to argue with you?
In my opinion, the maintenance argument which trumps all others has to
do with safety. Heating and air conditioning systems are fueled by electricity
and/or gas. Pure and simple, improper or inadequate maintenance of electric
and gas appliances is dangerous! How many house fires each year are blamed
on gas leaks or electrical shorts? How many people get sick (or worse)
as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning?
So, don't maintain your gas furnace to save money. Don't have your
air conditioner checked to prolong its life. But do have your HVAC system inspected at least annually
to protect yourself and your family. For just $125 per year (single system)
Tom's Mechanical will inspect the heating and air conditioning system
in your home, once in the Spring and again in the Fall.
